MINUTES OF THE FIRST MEETING
OF THE
sENATE OF mICHIGAN cOLLEGE OF mINING AND tECHNOLOGY

 12 November 1958

The meeting opened at 7:30 p.m., with President Van Pelt presiding

The roll of members was called, showing all members present except Duggan, Crawford, Bourdo, Myers, Work and Been.

After a discussion concerning faculty members who are not Senate members attending Senate meetings, Boyd moved that all faculty members be welcome to attend meetings of the Senate but should sit in a separate section to facilitate taking attendance of members and counting votes. Baker seconded the motion. The motion carried. It was brought out in the discussion that visitors should enter the discussions at Senate meetings only upon the request of the presiding officer.

A correction (of an omission) was made to the Constitution, Article III, Section C 1c, line 3. After the word "Director," the words "and Registrar" should be added.

Bredekamp nominated Meese for Secretary of the Senate. Nominations were closed and it was moved that the secretary be instructed to cast a unanimous ballot for Meese as Secretary for a two-year term expiring August 31, 1960. The motion carried.

The Senate then recessed to elect members to the Committees on Committees from each group of Senate members. The results of these four separate elections were as follows:

Elected for a two-year term:

     Group I      Sermon
     Group II     Hooker
     Group III    Longacre
     Group IV    Bayer

Elected for a one-year term:

     Group II     Wiedenhoefer
     Group III    Swenson
     Group IV    Park

Pearce moved that the Committee on Committees be instructed to work out the complete committee structure of the Senate; i.e. the necessary committees, their duties, their size, their chairmen, their membership, and the length of member terms. Sermon seconded the motion. The motion carried.

Bredekamp moved that the next meeting of the Senate be called not later than December 3, 1958, and the the Committee on Committees make the before mentioned report at that meeting for action by the Senate. Noblet seconded the motion. The motion was defeated.

Bredekamp then made the same motion except changed the date to January 7, 1959. Noblet seconded. The motion carried.

The meeting adjourned at 8:00 p.m.
